Amerigo

What does Amerigo mean?

Amerigo Pronunciation of Amerigo as a boys' name is of Italian and Old German origin, and the meaning of Amerigo is "work ruler; home ruler". Italian form of the Germanic name Amalric, from amal meaning "work" and rîc meaning "rule, power". Amalric was the name of a sixth-century Visigothic king. The French form of the name became Amaury, which then became the English surnames Emery, Emory and Emerson. Also a variant of Henry meaning "home ruler". The US, founded on the principle of home rule, took its nickname of "America" from Italian explorer Amerigo Vespucci.
