Celia ▼ as a girls' name is pronounced SEEL-yah. It is of Latin origin, and the meaning of Celia is "heaven". From Caelia, feminine form of the old Roman family name Caelius, probably from "caelum" meaning "heaven". Sometimes also used as a short form of Cecilia. Celio is the masculine form. The name was not used in the Middle Ages, and was introduced to the English-speaking world as the name of a character in Shakespeare's "As You Like It" (1599).
