♀ Evelyn
What does Evelyn mean?
Evelyn as a girls' name (also used less regularly as boys' name Evelyn) is pronounced EV-a-lin, EEV-lin. It is of Norman origin. Modern use derives from a transferred use of an English surname, from the Norman female name Aveline, from Ava. As a feminine it can come from the anglicized form of the Irish Eibhlin (see Eileen), an Irish form of Aveline. The name is also found as a variant anglicization of Irish Éibhleann (see Evlin). Also possibly from the Old German name Avila, or from the Latin avis meaning "bird". Not a blend of Eve and Lynn, though sometimes taken as such. American track celebrity Evelyn Ashford.
