His name was derived from the Persian "Timur-i lang", meaning "Temur the Lame", by Europeans during the 16th century. His Turkic name is Timur, which means "iron". He was described as a brave man of intelligence, and his tale was retold by 16th-century English poet Christopher Marlowe as a romantic tragedy, and also by Edgar Allan Poe in a poem.
